Talk About Pop Music

It’s one of my most favorite things to do! I’ve been doing it since before that picture was taken of me on the shore of Lake Michigan in my favorite Wham! shirt in 1986.

Podcasts are some of my favorite places to talk about pop music! Here’s my most recent appearance on the Permanent Record podcast where I chatted with Brian and Sarah about The Greatest Night in Pop just after it premiered on Netflix. So much fun to talk about some of my favorite things: “We Are The World”, the American Music Awards and 1980s pop stars!

I also love to talk about all things archive! So glad I got to do that with Alex Green on his Stereo Embers podcast.

Here’s a link to my conversation with Jon Lamoreaux on The Hustle Podcast where we talk about my career adventures in music and songs that have made a had a big impact on my life. It starts with one of my all-time favorites! While Wham! and George Michael are certainly favorite topics of conversation, we talk about the Indigo Girls, Michael Jackson, Duran Duran and whole lot more.

Brian and Sarah invited me on to the Permanent Record podcast and they wanted to talk almost entirely about Wham! I was certainly happy to do that. We spent three episodes on the 1984 album Make It Big. In the first episode, we talk about the album’s history. While the album is certainly the focus of the conversation, I enjoyed putting it into context with the other albums and hits of 1984.

In the second episode, we talk about the tracks on Side 1: Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go Everything She Wants, Heartbeat and Like A Baby. Videos, chart positions, Motown influence and an added bridge on the UK release all come up in this conversation.

In the third episode, we talk about the tracks on Side 2: Freedom, If You Were There, Credit Card Baby and Careless Whisper. Favorite tracks, live performances, and one of the most recognizable sax solos of all time are all discussed here.

In September 2020, I talked all about Debbie Gibson and her fans, the fabulous DebHeads, as part of the Museum of Popular Culture’s Pop Conference.

Longtime Debbie Gibson fan Noel Fogelman had me on his podcast Reliving My Youth to talk about my favorite Debbie Gibson memories and why I think her fans are particularly great.
